"Moreover whom He did predestinate, them He also called: and whom He called, them He also justified: and whom He justified, them He also glorified." Romans 8:30
Dr. Scofield, who edited the Scofield Bible says that 'predestination is the effective exercise of the will of God by which things before determined by Him are brought to pass.' That is, God says He is determined to do something and then He does it. God's wisdom is sovereign. What did God predestinate? That those whom God foreknew will be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ who is the Firstborn. God had one Son and He said, "I want more just like Him." And so God is redeeming a whole race of people, that all of these people might be conformed to the image of God's Son. If you are saved, you are predestined to be like Jesus. When God foreknew that you would receive Jesus as Your Lord and Savior, then He said, "It is settled. You will one day be like My Son."

Praise God that He foreknew you, that He predestined you to be like His Son, that He called you, that He justified you, that He glorified you! Jesus said, "It is finished!" Hallelujah! Praise the Lamb who was slain!

I thought God 'foreknew' everyone. I have also thought that we are all predestinated to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ---just that some will NOT be. This is my understanding.

Hi Amy;
We have preached, for centuries, that Matthew 22:14 means something altogether different than it says.

"For many are called, but few are chosen" Matt 22:14. Even today, even knowing what that verse actually says and means, I conjure up thoughts of Billy Graham crusades, where the Holy Spirit speaks to many thousands, but of them, will choose only a few to salvation.

But this isn't what the verse is telling us. For when the Holy Spirit speaks to us, brings to us conviction of our sins, IT IS NOT GOD WHO CHOOSES US, but we who must choose Him.

Always remember the words of Moses, who set the precedent, who demonstrated the priciple, "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live." Deut 30:19.

But note the truth of this verse. When God sets before us, by the conviction of the Holy Spirit, the choice between life and death, blessing and cursing....IT IS RECORDED. It is recorded in the book of life, under our names. And we can choose death and cursing, refusing to choose life, only so many times, before the Spirit will turn aside, and call others. For as the Word of God says, "My Spirit shall not always strive with man...." Even God can be pushed too far.

So it is not God who chooses us to salvation. It is we who choose God. But what then, of that verse? "For many are called, but few are chosen". It is that of the many who are called, and they are many....of the many who are called, a few will choose life and blessing over death and cursing, and come to God.

Of these, some will be minimal Christians. That is, they will do no more than is absolutely necessary to enter into heaven. Not one whit more....you know these kinds of Christians in your own life.

God knows who these are.

And of the few who choose to come to God, some will come to Him totally, completely, without reservation, giving themselves up to serving Him, being in Him, loving Him, with everything that is within them.

God know who these are to.

These are the chosen, for they can be useful to God in His eternal purpose, being as they are, totally dedicated to being led of the Holy Spirit, to witnessing, studying, giving, to seeking after the kingdom of God fully.

It is at this point alone, that predestination, election, or foreordination comes into play. It is AFTER we are saved, that God chooses us to play a role in His eternal purpose.

Certainly God knows who will be saved and who will not be saved. But why should He even bother to look? For they will either be saved, or they will not, and His looking to see will make no difference.

But when He looks and sees among those who are saved, some who will give themselves up so completely to Him....He chooses. It is these who are chosen to be conformed to the image of the Son of God. Remember, this passage says, "....to them who are THE CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE....

God bless you. I am and remain sincerely yours in Jesus Christ,

Sahagan, fully qualified....to be least among you.

Hi. :)

I got stuck on the part where you said:

For when the Holy Spirit speaks to us, brings to us conviction of our sins, IT IS NOT GOD WHO CHOOSES US, but we who must choose Him.

I disagree.

This is a confusing topic. I am not sure if I understand. Why is the second post deleted? What did it say?

Hi Amy;
Yes, certainly it is God who chooses to convict us by the Holy Spirit....

But it is we, and not God, who choose whether or not to obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Were it not so, everyone on earth would be saved, for it is not God's Will that any should be lost.

Sorry I spoke in such a confusing manner.

God bless you,

Sahagan

Hi. It is good to be clear on such things, for sure. I'll go back over your post now and see what else I can disagree with. lol. j/k. I will read it again, though. Thanks for your good posts. :)

Hi Amy;
Oh, its never to hard to find something to disagree with Sahagan on....after all, I've been wrong much more than I've been right!

On the other hand, we're all at different places on that road to glory. And where you are today, maybe I'll be in a year, or five years, or ten years....one thing's for sure, I'm still moving along, slow, but sure.

God bless you. I am and remain sincerely yours in Jesus Christ,

Sahagan, fully qualified....to be least among you.

:)

I haven't gone back over that post, yet, sorry. My brain is quite tired these days--lots going on with little sleep. In fact, I think I'll take a wee nap before lunch! lol.

God bless you and keep you, Sahagan.
